Barefoot Kuata Island

Top choice in Yasawa Group

This former beach-bum hostel has undergone a complete overhaul to become a spectacular, stylish hideaway (without the hefty price tag). New, spacious, beachside six- and eight-bed dorms offer million-dollar views; bures are modern with cute interiors; privates have fabulous outdoor showers. Beautiful design elements are everywhere, from the seaside footprint-shaped pools to the carved handiwork lending major 'wow' to the sand-floored restaurant/bar.

The compulsory meal plan ($75) includes big breakfasts, lunch and three-course dinners; there are loads of vegetarian options. The island's dive shop has a strong focus on marine conservation; good value stay-and-dive packages are available.

At time of research, work was underway on a huge games room, rock-top spa and jungle tents.
