Minutes from the airport but tucked away in a verdant valley, Stoney Creek is less 'resort' than retreat, with brilliant hosts Michelle and Gary on hand to make your escape as easygoing or energetic as you like: loungers will love the pool, comfy chair-scattered common area and bure Jacuzzis, while active types can take advantage of mountain bike hire and organised treks to nearby attractions.

Construction of a mini-golf course was underway at research time; in the meantime, kids will love tearing around the huge grounds and pestering the menagerie of resident cats and dogs. The on-site restaurant (mains $18 to $25) dishes up toothsome local fare.
