Simien Lodge

Simien Mountains National Park

At 3260m this is Africa’s highest hotel. The thatch-and-stone tukuls are large and comfy, although many travellers feel they don’t get nearly enough for the price. Despite the location, rooms are on the dark side and the under-floor heating does little to take the edge off freezing nights. That said, the food is excellent and its commitment to local projects is admirable.

In 2016 the lodge won first prize at the Skal International Sustainable Tourism Awards – this place puts solar energy front and centre and it also supports numerous local development projects. There's also a bar, a community handicrafts shop and a van for picking up guests in Gonder. Ask about its work in rehabilitating the Saddique Amba monastery – the trek there is stunning.
