In search of an authentic rural experience in a wonderfully scenic location? Beeline for this community-run lodge perched high on the edge of a gorge in Mahamba, about 25km west of Nhlangano. Six lovely stone chalets provide simple but clean and comfortable rooms with hot showers; all have decks from which you can look over the Mkhondvo River.
Electricity is available 24 hours and the chalets are self catering. Hiking opportunities abound within the gorge; you can hire local guides for around E50 per day. You are also welcome to visit the grounds and have a braai (barbecue) even if not staying the night (adult/child E15/8).
From the Mahamba border post, turn left immediately after the post onto a dirt road (follow the sign 'Mahamba High School'); head for around 2km to Mahamba Church. The lodge is another 3km. It's accessible in a normal vehicle in dry weather.
