York

This cafe-deli is a standout in York. On the one side you've got the best of Yorkshire tripping over the best of Europe, with Italian white anchovies and truffle-infused olive oil stacked alongside York honey mead and baked pies; on the other you've got a Dickensian-style sweet shop and backroom cafe serving dishes crafted from the deli.

The cafe only has four tables but it's worth the wait (or book). It serves strong Guatemalan coffee, speciality teas and light meals like warmed goat's cheese and hazelnut salad – call ahead to check lunch is on. Out front, rows of old-fashioned glass dispensers hold unusual homemade alcohols, like Yorkshire sloe whisky, and balsamics, such as 12-year-aged chestnut.
