Boasting of being England’s first-ever coffee house – though not, unlike its rival opposite, open ever since – the Grand looks very much the part, with its columns and gold leaf. While it serves sandwiches, bagels and a towering afternoon tea (from £18), it’s the patisserie counter that’s the real attraction: fresh, sweet pastry tarts and feather-light millefeuilles pair brilliantly with tea.
