Chain Locker

South Cornwall

Said to be one of Falmouth's oldest pubs, the Chain Locker is one of the town's best-loved waterside pubs, and recently received a top-to-toe overhaul from brewing behemoth St Austell Brewery. Happily, the downstairs bar has retained its nautical charm – old signs, ships' ephemera, black-and-white photos – and the dockside tables are perfect on a sunny day.

The refit has also added space for smart upstairs rooms (doubles £130 to £155) and a more modern-styled restaurant (mains £12 to £20) on the 1st floor.
