Carlton Hotel

Cairo

This 1930s hotel still clings on to wisps of yesteryear in its gloomily lit foyer. The well-kept renovated ('class A') rooms with fresh-ish coats of paint – in the hotel's central core near the elevator shaft – are the ones you want. The further you walk down the long corridors, the more decrepit the rooms get. The rooftop bar is a decent beer stop.
