Helenekilde Badehotel

Zealand

On raised lawns high above a long, divided beach, this genteel boutique hotel was originally a silver wedding present from a wealthy 19th-century merchant to his (ungrateful) wife. Cosy communal areas feature beautiful furnishings, art and the odd vintage suitcase-turned-coffee table, while the rooms themselves have a low-key elegance, 16 of the 28 looking out across the waves.

Dreamy sea views are also on tap at its casually elegant restaurant, which serves up a regularly changing menu of classic Danish fare. The hotel is a five-minute walk along a leafy lane (signposted from the station), and there's steep access down to the beach. Parking can get difficult at lunchtime.
