Down a lane full of flowers and birds, Hornbækhus is based on a 1904 house that was very much expanded in the 1920s and '30s. Though undermined by a half-hearted reception that is only fully manned till 3pm (waiters help check-ins till 8pm), there are beautifully maintained upstairs lounges that, like many of the 26 rooms, exude a classical-style grandeur.
Some rooms have balconies overlooking the extensive lawns, though certain upper-floor rooms share a very basic WC-shower room. The hotel was a noted retreat for poets and artists before and after WWII. While staying in 1956, cartoonist Hergé sketched a special Tintin scene as a Hornbækhus thank you. From June to August, the former Hotel Villa Strand is used as an annexe; it's set back from the coastal dunes, a block further north at Kystvej 12.
