Fábrica de Arte Cubano

Top choice

If only every city had a cultural venue as wide-ranging, inclusive and downright revolutionary as Havana’s unique art factory. The brainchild of Cuban fusion musician X-Alfonso in 2014, this gallery/live-music venue/inspirational meeting place for anyone who can afford the CUC$2 entry fee is where electrifying ‘happenings’ take place in a cavernous, Bauhaus-like interior.

Forget surly bouncers and elitist VIP passes. The Fábrica is a wonderfully cool yet unpretentious place where you’re encouraged to meet the performers as well as applaud them. Repertoires are as flexible as they are creative. Expect everything from classical cellists to Cuban rappers to arty T-shirt designers selling their latest creations.

For the best experience, arrive at the Fábrica early (it opens promptly at 8pm) to explore the revolving art exhibits, food outlets and music stages before the crowd arrives. There are numerous bars and performance spaces. Food and drink concessions don’t accept cash; instead, you must run up a bill on a stamp card and pay (in cash) when you leave.

Various performances take place throughout the evening, usually starting around 9pm – follow the sounds. Free dance lessons are sometimes offered, and artists, designers and musicians mingle with the crowd. It’s more than exciting.

The Fábrica is closed for the entire months of May, September and January. It is well worth planning your trip around these times – it’s that good!
