La Posada del Molino

Top choice

This 230-year-old renovated colonial mansion gives plenty of comfort and a whole lotta atmosphere for the peso. The building's bright blue-and-yellow interiors evoke its colorful history. It was once the local police post (check out the preserved holding cell) and is reputedly haunted.

Some rooms are decorated with tasteful wooden furnishings, while simpler, newer cabañas offer five beds each. Try to get the Paso de Balcones room upstairs, which has phenomenal mountain views from its private porch.

All rooms have quality features like satellite TV, wi-fi, hardwood floors and renovated bathrooms. The gorgeous fossil-strewn courtyard with a babbling brook will lull you to sleep. Service is top notch and it's also one of the best places in town to eat (meals COP$7000 to COP$18,000).

The hotel is one of the town's few places to accept credit and debit cards; staff can also organize a cash advance if you run out of funds.
