Thrust down a rather charmless alley, this friendly place has compact five-bed dorms and unadorned but pleasant enough doubles. There's an inviting, small lounge, kitchen facilities and a cute, sunny courtyard where a yurt is stuffed. Staff are eager to show off Mongolian culture and organise loads of trips to the grasslands as well as to the Kubuqi Desert and Naadam.
Take your shoes off at the entrance, located behind a metal door onto to the street. The downstairs toilet rather surprisingly has a Jacuzzi. Mongolian breakfast is ¥15. For the price, you could probably find a better double room elsewhere, but the atmosphere here is congenial. Finding the place can be difficult too; call ahead and get a pick-up from the train station. Otherwise take bus 2, 37 or 61 to the Inner Mongolia Hospital, then walk east for six minutes on Qiaokao Xijie. It’s down an unmarked alley almost opposite the northern end of Huang Jie. Look for the (very small) blue sign. A taxi costs around ¥11. If arriving by plane, take airport bus line 1 or 3.
