La Hierbita

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

La Hierbita was first restaurant to be licensed in the city, in 1893. Back then Calle Clavel was at the heart of the red-light district; part of the current restaurant was actually a brothel. There is nothing seedy about the food, however; dishes are upmarket versions of traditional Canarian recipes, and the place has loads of atmosphere.

The seafood dishes on the well-thumbed menu are particularly memorable, along with the pulse-based soups and stews; there's a few vegetarian dishes too. The building still retains plenty of original features and antique memorabilia. Dining rooms are spread over two creaky wooden floors and faded old photos add to the intrigue.
