Housed in the historic Jacquet House, which dates from 1675, this place is a well-worn tourist destination, specializing in robust country cooking and typical Québécois specialties served by waitstaff in historic garb. The menu du jour, offered from noon to 5.45pm, is by far the best deal at around $20 for three courses, including a glass of wine or beer.
Traditional dishes featured on the menu include bison bourguignonne in cream and blueberry wine sauce, duck breast in a maple-syrup reduction, Lac St-Jean game pie, and wild caribou filet mignon. The restaurant gets its name from the novel Les Anciens Canadiens (The Canadians of Old) by Philippe-Aubert de Gaspé, who lived in the house from 1815 to 1824. The original rooms have been left intact, resulting in several small, intimate dining areas.
