Auberge de la Paix

Québec City

With welcoming staff, cheerfully painted rooms and a tree-filled garden, this funky old-school hostel on a quiet backstreet feels less institutional than the official HI hostel to the southwest. The eight dorms with four to eight solid wooden bunkbeds are complemented by five coveted private rooms (with shared bath) that must be booked well in advance. Continental breakfast included.

It's a chilled place – the 1960s-style peace sign above the entrance says it all.
