Local bands know they've made it when they play Vancouver's best mid-sized venue, a restored art-deco ballroom that still has the city's bounciest dance floor – courtesy of tires placed under its floorboards. If you need a break from moshing, collapse at one of the tables lining the perimeter, catch your breath with a bottled brew and then plunge back in.
Check the calendar as soon as you book your Vancouver-bound flights; international acts often play here and it's a great space to see anyone. The historic Commodore has been entertaining locals since 1929 and everyone from Count Basie to the Dead Kennedys has played here over the years (although apparently they weren't on the same bill).
