Retreat from civilisation in isolated Kosovo (population 10), a 50km drive south of Plovdiv. Three houses in this 16th-century village have been faithfully renovated in stone and wood to form the Kosovo Houses complex. Each room overflows with traditional Rodopi touches such as crimson rugs and polished antique furnishings. Enthusiastic owners will have you picking wild mushrooms and hiking to nearby villages in no time.
The tavern is as atmospheric as the lodgings, and serves local flavours such as Smilyan beans with eggs, polenta with wild mushrooms, and famed Rodopi potatoes.
