Cowering in the shadow of some of Austria’s highest peaks, Matreier Tauernhaus is a fine example of an alpine chalet, with recently revamped rooms sporting rustic wood furnishings and mountain prints. Run by the Brugger family for the past five generations, it was originally built for the Archbishop of Salzburg in 1207. It’s a great base for an ascent of Grossvenediger.
