Savoy Hotel on Little Collins

Melbourne

With 11 floors, the Savoy was a modest family hotel when it opened in 1866. It's since undergone a number of major renovations, the most recent in 2018 leaving stunning internal glass and steel windows, plush furniture and art-deco touches, like patterned carpet. About three-quarters of guests are corporate, but don't let them hog the 163 elegant rooms.

Atrium rooms don't have outdoor views, but are huge and look down on the dining area. The best views are from executive corner rooms. Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire and other big names once stayed and played here. Now a computerised piano plays for an hour each morning. Remember to have a drink at the marble-clad Alexander Bar. A martini seems appropriate.
