This venerable old stager is Australia’s oldest continuously operating theatre, with actors first treading the boards here back in 1837 (the foundation stone says 1834, but it took them a few years to finish it). Theatregoers can expect an eclectic range of music plus ballet, theatre, opera, comedy and university revues.
Guided tours are available (one-hour tour adult/child $15/10) at 11am Monday, Wednesday and Friday. At the time of writing, the theatre was closed for renovations, and set to reopen as part of the Hedberg performing arts centre in mid-2019, so call ahead to check on the status of its backstage tours.
