Unique and impressive, Pumphouse Point occupies a three-tier hydroelectric pump house built in 1940 atop Lake St Clair, accessed via a narrow pier, as well as a smaller art-deco substation and a hidden retreat on the shoreline. Pumphouse rooms are best, though you'll gravitate to its sun-drenched lounges even if you're staying in the Shorehouse. Everything about the place is world-class.
Delicious buffet breakfasts and set-menu dinners ($56 per head) are served on communal tables in the Shorehouse dining room, and every room has a larder stocked with a generous array of Tasmanian food and wine for purchase. Retreat prices are inclusive of all meals, drinks and larder items. Children are not allowed, and there's no wi-fi. Book well in advance, especially if you wish to stay over summer.
