Great Western Hotel

Rockhampton

Dating from 1862, the GWH is part country pub, part concert venue and part of Rockhampton's social fabric. Out the back is an undercover bullring – try to time your visit for a Wednesday or Friday night, when you can watch brave cattlefolk being tossed in the air by bucking bulls and broncos in events such as the 'Bad Boy Mowdown'.

The beefy theme continues inside, where you can sit in the reproachful glare of champion bulls, their heads and bloodlines displayed on the wall, and eat grain-fed Wagyu and the likes of choc vanilla beef jerky cheesecake in the Bullhead Steakhouse (steaks $32-36). Touring country and rock bands occasionally play here, alongside bouts of Ultimate Fighting Championship and stand-up comedy.
