Kipling, Gide, Churchill and Eisenhower all stayed in this gracious place, locally known as the St George. It's lost some of its dusty ambience to recent renovations, but gained a smart, business outlook and a lot more comfort. The real draws, though, are the location, lavish public areas and heritage gardens. There are four restaurants, a bar and a pool.

Big discounts are often offered on rooms almost before you've had time to say hello. It's on a hill directly above the city centre (but it would be a bit of a walk) from where there are wonderful city views.
